猫がフードや水の器を掘る7つの理由
猫の飼い主なら、愛猫にはとても興味深い習性や行動があることにうなずくでしょう。簡単に説明できるものもあれば、そうでないものもあります。そんな気になる行動の一つが、猫がフードボウルや水飲みボウルを掘ることです。あなたの猫にも心当たりがあるなら、この不思議な習性を読み解いていきましょう...

残念ながら、この奇妙な習性に一つの明確な答えはありません。ただし、深刻な問題を示すものではないのでご安心ください。代わりに、信頼できるもっともらしい説がいくつかあり、そのどれもがあなたの猫に当てはまる可能性があります。

結局のところ、すぐに何か対処する必要はありませんが、この行動が気になったり周囲を散らかされたりする場合は、原因に応じて減らす方法を検討できます。

考えられる理由を見ていきましょう。

1. 食事の変化
最近、猫の食事をドライフードからウェットフードに、またはその逆に変えましたか？もしそうなら、これはその変化が気に入らず、別のものを食べたいという猫からのサインかもしれません。猫が理由もなく好き嫌いをするわけではありません！特定のフードや味で掘る行動が増えるようであれば、その味をメニューから外すことを検討しましょう。

2. 本能的な行動
猫が掘るのは、大型のネコ科動物の親類と共通する遺伝的な本能にすぎない場合もあります。野生の猫は、後で食べるために、ほかの動物に食べられないように、また捕食者を遠ざけるために、食べ物を埋める傾向があります。つまり、家猫も自然に備わった行動をまねているだけなのかもしれません。特に、野良猫や野生化した猫だった場合は、身を守る術を本能的に身につけているため、この傾向が顕著です。
 
3. 年齢
まだ若い猫の場合、不安からこの行動をしている可能性があります。家の中にほかの猫や動物はいませんか？少し不安を感じていたり、食べ物を取られると感じていたりするのかもしれません。周囲の環境に慣れ、食べ物が奪われないと確信できれば、この行動は収まるはずです。ほかの家族やペットに邪魔されない部屋に、猫のフードボウルを置いてみるのもよいでしょう。

4. 場所
猫は非常にきれい好きな動物で、フードボウルがトイレの近くにあることをとても嫌います。現在このような配置なら、排泄物の近くで食べなければならないことへの本能的な嫌悪感が、掘る行動の原因かもしれません。スペースがあれば、トイレを別の場所へ移して、掘るのをやめるか様子を見てみましょう。

5. 清潔さ
続いて、フードボウルや水飲みボウル自体が十分に清潔でないと感じて、周りを掘ることもあります。猫用の食器は毎日しっかり洗いましょう。そうすれば、掘る行動がなくなるかもしれません。

6. ボウルのサイズと種類
猫にはどのようなボウルでごはんをあげていますか？サイズや形が、猫が掘る行動の一因になっているのかもしれません。一般的に猫は、非常に敏感なヒゲがボウルの側面に触れることを好みません。特にヒゲがとても長い猫では顕著です。フードや水が周囲に飛び散らないようにするには、幅が狭い楕円形のボウルや、縁の低いボウルが最適です。

7. 視力
これは主に水飲みボウルに関係します。猫は近視で視力があまり良くないため、ボウルの中の水が正確にどこにあるのか判断しづらいことがあります。そこで足を使って波紋を作り、水を見つけやすくするのです。ガラス製や金属製のボウルを使っていると、この問題がさらに大きくなるため、陶器製や柄付きのボウルに替えてみましょう。あるいは、ウォーターファウンテンへの投資も検討できます。猫は屋外の水場から水を飲むのが好きなので、特に気に入るでしょう。

    My cat uses her paw to fish out a single piece of food out of the bowl and then proceeds to eat it off the floor. She has done this for 17+ years now - the only time she didn't was when she didn't eat for 3 days in protest because my dad bought the wrong brand of food! When we finally switched it back, she was so hungry she just dove right in! :)

    My cat likes to dig in her water bowl and the toilet Getting water everywhere. I have no clue why she does this!!!

    Monkey turns over her dry food bowl. She's getting several types, mainly fancy feast naturals chicken and another brand name for indoor cats, also chicken, both which he likes. Good with wet food thank God! Sometimes moves the water bowl too. Anyone's cat like to dig in the litter pan? He's just so michevious!

    I have two cats both two years old and sisters one drinks of water like it’s fine but my other one digs in the water and makes a huge mess I gave them fresh water every day I did change her bowl about eight months ago and now she digs and splashes and gets water everywhere before she drinks out of it is there anything I can do to help so I don’t have a mess in my kitchen

    One of my cats repeatedly smacks the water in ANY water dish, then licks it off his paw. Not w the kitten is doing the same. He rarely drinks any other way.

    Cat instinct have them play with their prey for a long time before eating it because if the prey is exhausted then it won’t fight and injure them. They may just be instinctually playing with their food. I would try a non slip mat (you can get them really cheap at the dollar store) or bowls that have non slip rubber bottoms to help the bowls remain stationary. As for water, my kitties do have a hard time seeing the level of the water. Whatever the reason I would try the non slip mat and no slip bowls so they stay put. Hope that helps, good luck! 🍀 🐈‍⬛
